Couldn't Miss This Guy...

A life-size replica of an albino sperm whale that inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick.  Awesome.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

We survived moving day(s)!  It was extremely stressful...I was kind of a spazz during the whole thing.  But the movers FINALLY got everything packed up and Lucy got all our bags in the car and I turned in my apartment keys!  We headed out to our first exciting destination - the Cox store in Herndon.  I turned in my modem and with that, my final moving chore was complete.  Yay!

Saturday morning we hit the road for real!  And the very first thing we did when we got to Richmond was head for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.  We, (well, actually, mostly me) wanted to see the Faberge exhibit!  But Lucy was a great sport.  Here are the pics of some of the very prettiest things you have ever seen.

These are cane handles.  And they make me wish I had a cane.

This is the fanciest letter opener I have ever seen.
 Faberge cigarette cases.
More cigarette cases.  So shiney!  I'm sure I could use one as a coin purse or something.
The fanciest cigarette case of all.

Centipede - Viewer Discretion is Advised

Hey Lucy,

Ok so you remember me telling you how super creepy the centipedes here are?  And you asked if I had ever taken a picture and I said "No, usually when I see them I just scream, run and grab the raid and then spray the things until they stop running and their legs stop twitching (that part takes a while)."  I never stop to think about getting out my camera.  BUT, since you asked me to take a picture...here you go.  See?  What did I tell you?  Gives you the heebie jeebies, doesn't it?  The worst part is the centipedes are quick as lightening - seriously, I have rarely seen a bug that can move so fast.  If you blink, it could disappear.  And you have NO idea where it has gone.  But you do know that it will come back.  And it will probably wait until until you are at your most vulnerable, to come out of hiding and scare the living daylights out of you.  Try getting a good night's sleep knowing that THAT is in your house.

You are very welcome,
Georgia

Packing in Progress

Lucy!

So this is how my apartment looked yesterday:

But by the time you arrive tonight, it will all be in boxes!  Sorry you won't get to see my apartment in all it's splendor with your own eyes.  But I think the pictures actually do it justice.  So it's almost like seeing the real thing.  P.S. I think we should get a hotel tonight.  I kind of forgot they would be packing the shower curtain and towels. Oops.

I can't wait to see you!  It's been so long!  Of course, we're probably gonna be so sick of each other in two weeks. :)  Well, I don't know...maybe we won't be!  We're so much older and more mature than we were the first time you came to visit me in Poland!  I know that I got mad when you dropped my mashed potatoes and gravy on the ground in the Gdansk train station (seriously, I had JUST bought them!), but that was so many years ago.  I'm sure that now I would be very calm and kind about the whole thing.  I wouldn't even glare at you!  Well ok, actually, no, I would probably still glare at you.  But I would do my very best not to say "Lucy!  GOSH!"  :)  This cross-country road trip is going to be so much fun.  I can tell.

Have a good flight and I'll see you in a few hours!

Love,
Georgia

Late Night

Hello Lucy,

I, too, have an inordinate amount of stuff to do.  In fact, I got so wrapped up geting ready for the movers to come tomorrow, that at 10PM I suddenly thought, "Wow, why in the world am I so hungry?"  And that's when I realized I hadn't had dinner.  I was just so busy!  Not to worry though, I just finished eating dinner...now that it's midnight.

Yes, go ahead and take a cab tomorrow.  Your very first cab ride by yourself.  How exciting.  Just make sure you have my address and you can tell the driver where to go.  Better yet, write it down on a piece of paper so that you can hand it to the driver.  Since you are flying into Dulles, that means you will be taking a Washington Flyer Taxi.  They are dark silver taxis with white writing on the side that says "Washington Flyer Taxi."  Oh - and you've seen Taken right?  I just watched it last weekend.  Now I assume you are smarter than Liam Neeson's daughter and that you already know this, but just in case...if a hot guy asks you if you want to share a cab, just say NO.  Not that our Dad isn't as cool as Liam Neeson...but I have a feeling that Dad's engineering skills and knowledge of hydraulic systems won't be nearly as helpful in busting up a human trafficing ring as Mr. Neeson's killing skills were.  Anyway, call me when you land.  I can tell you which way to exit the airport to find the line for the taxis.

I'll see you tomorrow!!!

Love,
Georgia

One More Day

Well, I have so much to do before I come Georgia, so this will be a short post. I do believe that it would be a good idea to keep the trip to ten days though. 27 days on the road might kill us...and by day 15, I will be begging for my own bed and shower. I am super excited to come. I leave on Thursday Morning and will arrive that evening. Am I still taking a taxi to your house? I know that I can't drink when I turn 21, but I can certainly take my own taxi. It's almost a right of passage. But I would not mind a ride back to your house in James. Let me know soon.
Hugs and Kisses

Good News and Bad News

Hello Lucy,

So...we may need to shorten our trip across the country.  It's just that I counted up all the places I wanted to stop and realized it was going to take us like 27 days to get to California.  That seemed a little excessive.  And a little expensive.  And a little crazy.  Also, as it turns out, the movers said they may want to deliver my stuff as early as September 26th.  So we kind of need to be back by then.

I was having a terrible time trying to figure out how we could get back to California in only 10 days AND make all the stops I wanted to make.  Sadly, I don't think it can be done.  So then I was left with the difficult task of picking which stops to skip.  :(  I think we may have to drop the trip to Blanchard Springs Cavern in Arkansas.  I am very sad about this.  BUT, I do have some good news.  I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO.  (Hah - kidding.  I have actually been with GEICO for quite a while).  No the real good news is that I think I have found another, more convenient place to see some caverns!  I really want to go see The Natural Bridge in Virginia.  I've wanted to see it ever since I moved out here.  I've just never had the chance.  So I thought maybe I should see it on my way out of the state.  Nothing like the last minute!  Anyway, when I was looking at the Natural Bridge website, I noticed that you can also purchase tickets for the Natural bridge caverns!  See for yourself!

So if we stop in Natural Bridge we get to see the bridge AND the caverns.  Judging by the looks of happiness and wonder on the faces of the people on the website, I think we will enjoy our time there.

I'm sorry to skip our stop in Arkansas, but I hope that the Natural Bridge Caverns will help appease you.  We may also need to skip some stops in New Mexico and Arizona...but fortunately those are quite close to home.  We can dedicate a later trip solely to Arizona and New Mexico if we like.  Maybe we should go to New Mexico for the hot air balloon festival next year!  I really do want to go on a hot air ballon ride someday.

Well, I will see you very soon, Lucy!

Love,
Georgia
